Lawmakers pass constitutional convention bill

Bill passed the House, moves to Senate for consideration

The Oklahoma House has adopted a resolution asking voters to decide whether to call a constitutional convention to consider changes to the Oklahoma Constitution.

The resolution was approved without debate Wednesday. It now moves on to the Senate for consideration.

The measure says the state Constitution requires that voters decide at least every 20 years whether a constitutional convention should be convened. But that hasn't been happening. In fact, the last resolution on a constitutional convention was submitted to a vote in March 1970.

Legisltators tried back in 1994 to eliminate the requirement that a convention proposal be submitted every 20 years, but that attempt was unsuccessful.
