OK House committee approves so-called Merry Christmas bill

Allows teachers, students to use holiday greetings in school

Oklahoma students may not have to worry about getting in trouble for something as simple as saying ”Merry Christmas” to a friend or a teacher.

The House Common Education Committee passed the bill sending it to the House for more discussion and a vote.

The bill would also allow schools to put up displays on school property like menorahs, nativity scenes or a Christmas trees.

The author of the bill, Rep. Ken Walker, R-Tulsa, says it will protect Oklahoma school districts from lawsuits over religious-based holiday displays. Walker did say, though, that he has not heard of any lawsuits of the nature.

Such displays would have to include representations from more than one religion.
