Gun safety lesson goes horribly wrong

Police say alcohol may have been a factor

A 36-year-old man is dead after putting what he thought was an unloaded pistol to his head and pulling the trigger while teaching his girlfriend how to handle the firearm.

The gun turned out to be loaded and fired, killing him.

The girlfriend told police that the man, whose name wasn’t immediately released, had been drinking for most of the day when he decided to show her that guns were safe when empty.

The third gun was not.

She tells the Oakland County Sheriffs that he had successfully placed two other guns to his head and pulled the triggers to show her they were empty.

He was pronounced dead at the scene northwest of Detroit.
