Green Waste site a good source for free firewood

Need an excuse to take your deadfall there? Consider picking up free fuel for the fireplace

Many Tulsans shivering in the cold might wish they had a fire going, but firewood can be pricey unless bought in bulk.

Another option: Pick up some free firewood at the city's Green Waste site.

Located on the north side of 56th Street North between Mingo and Highway 169, the site is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. seven days a week, except for on city holidays.

And they give away the mulch and firewood to any Tulsa resident who wants some.

They accept all raw, untreated wood -- debris from fallen limbs, old Christmas trees, et cetera.

Some of the wood is massive, and needs to be cut down or split to fit into a fireplace.

You'll need to bring your own tools for that purpose.

But on a recent visit, our KRMG reporter was able to pick up about a quarter rick of wood already cut up in small pieces in the space of about five minutes.

Contractors and out-of-town residents can also utilize the site's services for a small fee.
