Ford Motor will become this first automaker to have a half-ton pickup truck that runs on compressed natural gas, when it launches a CNG version of its popular F-150 model this fall.
The CNG version isn't cheap, anywhere from $6,000 to $9,000 more than its gasoline-powered cousin, but Ford says people who do a lot of driving could make up that difference in a couple of years.
"If you look at Oklahoma, you're less than a dollar per gallon equivalent," said Ford spokesman Jon Coleman. "You compare to $3.75 or $4.00 per gallon for gasoline, or OVER $4.00 for diesel, it really is a tremendous fuel savings."
That's about 25-percent more than what the company sold in 2012.
Ford expects to sell around 15,000 CNG vehicles this year.
