When Lt. Walsh’s Boylston Street firefighter brothers asked his widow Kristen what they could do to help ease the pain of her loss, she said all she wanted was his wedding ring, which was not on his finger when his body was recovered from the scene of one of the worst fires in the city's history.
So, they vowed to find it.
First, they searched the station from top-to-bottom and came up empty.
Somehow, the ring must have come off when Eddie was fighting the fire.
Other searches of places Eddie may have put the ring also came up with no results, so they were left with just one more place to search: the scene of the fire that killed him.
They enlisted the help of the BFD Investigation Unit and headed to the rubble of the burned-out building.
They spent most of the day searching through dirt, debris and soot.
Then, just before 6 p.m. came the words they had all wanted to hear when one of the searchers called out “I’VE GOT IT!”
Moments later all the firefighters were in a convoy and headed to St. Patrick’s Church where Eddie’s wake was taking place.
District Chief Richard Magee Jr. had the honor of presenting the ring to Kristen, and The Boston Globe reports that she "took the ring and slid it on her finger. It was big, real big, but it fit in all the ways that matter."
