Escaped camel bites, stomps 70-year-old man

Man in the hospital with severe lacerations

The beast got out of its cage and sent one man to the hospital before it was captured and taken to an animal care facility.

As the camel wandered through the streets of Palmdale, California it encountered 70-year-old Steve Brefka. When Brefka tried to round up the dromedary, it attached him.

"Apparently, the camel knocked him down, bit him and had him by the head on the ground and was kicking him," Brefka's daughter Skylar Dossenbach told ABC 7 in Los Angeles.

Deputies, animal control workers and other neighbors were finally able to contain the camel and drive Brefka to the hospital.

When neighbors tried to help, the animal turned on them, forcing them to scramble into their cars and drive away.

Dossenbach reports he was treated for head lacerations but is expected to recover.

She also said at least five other animals, including a buffalo and an ostrich have wandered away from the sanctuary this year.

Deputies expect the owner of the facility to face charges for endangering residents.
