Eleven people treated for heat related illnesses Saturday

EMSA reports that as of Saturday afternoon, 11 people were treated for heat related illness.

The last three patients were adults, who were all taken to local hospitals in fair condition.   Earlier in the day, eight teenagers were treated for heat related illness at a football camp at Booker T. Washington High School.  None of the teenagers needed to go to the hospital.

EMSA reminds residents how to stay healthy and be safe in Oklahoma heat and humidity during the summer season.

2.  Wear light colored and loose fitting clothes, and wear a wide brimmed hat when working outdoors.

1. Hydration is key to prevent heat-related illness.  Drink plenty of water or sports drinks like Gatorade, that have electrolytes, before, during and after any type of activities out in the heat and sun.

3.  Take plenty of breaks in the shade or indoors, if possible, and drink water while on break as well.

4.  Avoid drinking alcohol or caffeine while outside.

5.  If you don't have air conditioning, or if you are exercising or working outside away from home, find a cooling station or public space (libraries, malls, etc.) during the day to cool off.

6.  Don't limit using air conditioning.

7.  Call PSO to get help with your electric bill.  PSO has a number of programs to help customers during the summer months.

8.  Use the buddy system when working or exercising outside.

9.  Check on elderly neighbors.

10.  Keep a cell phone with you when working or exercising outside.  If you experience overheating or other heat-related symptoms, call 911 immediately.
