Driver tells police he was on pills, two road workers killed

Investigators say the driver admitted to nodding off.

It should have been a typical day at work for Ronnie Blagg Jr. and Mike Turner.

The contract workers for the City of Tulsa went to work on the traffic lights at 71st and Elwood Monday when a horrifying scene unfolded.

A speeding westbound driver on 71st street flew off the road near Elwood Avenue and hit the two workers before rolling and coming to rest on its roof.

Investigators say the driver, 18-year-old Harley Stone, admitted that he had taken pills earlier in the day had nodded off.

Blagg’s wife, Carla, says, “It’s the worst phone call anybody could get. He was my soul mate.”

The victim’s coworkers are doing what they can to help the families.

Blagg says, “They cried with me. They’ve hugged me. They told me I would make it through it.”

Police say the car never showed any sign of slowing down before the driver veered off the road and went airborne.

A memorial now sits in the spot where Blagg and Turner were killed.
