Dow flirts with 17,000 as market sets new highs

News of manufacturing in the U.S. and China expanded fueled the numbers

NEW YORK (AP) - Stocks have finished at record highs, as the Dow industrials close in on the 17,000 mark.

The blue-chip index rose 129 points today, to finish the day 44 points below 17,000. It had earlier come within two points of that level.

The S&P 500 gained 13 points and the Nasdaq composite rose 50.

Netflix jumped 7 percent after analysts at Goldman Sachs raised their outlook on the stock.

Bond prices fell. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 2.56 percent.

Stocks gained after reports showing that manufacturing in the U.S. and China expanded in June.
