Some sheriff's deputies are accused of gunning down two innocent people.
Los Angeles County Sheriff John Scott says his deputies have experienced "a police officer's greatest nightmare" - gunning down an innocent person.
Monday night, deputies responding to a hostage situation fired at a wounded, bloody man rushing out of a West Hollywood apartment and the man running behind him.
The man killed was 30-year-old John Winkler, an aspiring TV producer.
They turned out to be escaping hostages.
The other hostage was shot in the leg and is in stable condition.
