Council asked to change name of Brady District

Speakers say name is bad for the city

A group calling for the name of the district to be changed came forward at the beginning of May.

They claim the name is racially insensitive and accuse namesake Tate Brady of being a member of the KKK and taking part in the 1921 Tulsa race riot.

Before the speakers began councilor Jack Henderson said “We have a racial problem here in Tulsa.”

Members of the Coalition for Social Justice and others showed up at Thursday night’s Tulsa city council meeting and asked for the council to take action.

But Henderson added “we’re getting better, we’re going to try and straighten this out.”

Speaking to the council Mike Workman said “whether you just strike the name Brady Arts district to be Arts district of something else, action needs to be taken.”

Workman continued “this is the time we need to move forward.”

The council pointed out they can’t change the name of the district or any private business but could change the name of Brady Street.
