At first, the photo of a dog with a massive tumor growing from its stomach, infected and crawling with maggots, looked like a possible case of severe neglect.
KRMG listener Kayla Overton contacted the radio station and asked for help.
Her daughter had alerted her to the dog's condition earlier on Wednesday.
That's when she posted a photo on Facebook, and called KRMG.
"She's standing here, and the female (dog) is here, and Celine is just crying, and she's like 'mommy, what can we do? what can we do? can we fix her owie?'"
She also called Animal Control officers to the home near E. 46th St. and S. Yale Ave.
No one answered the door at the home where the dog lived, so the officer left.
KRMG checked in the next day, Thursday, and the dog was no longer in the back yard, nor were the other two dogs that lived there.
As we spoke with Overton, the owner of the dogs approached to say that the dog with the tumor had been euthanized.
"We had to put her down last night, so we don't have no problems with nobody," he said.
The man declined to give his name, but said the situation was a misunderstanding.
"We was trying to let the poor dog die peacefully, in her own yard," he told KRMG, adding that they had her on pain medication.
Sadly, someone who apparently became aware of the situation may have taken the law into their own hands.
"Now, somebody came and took our two dogs," he said.
The man had to explain to his children that someone had stolen their healthy pets the same night they had to put down the sick one.
He only hopes someone will do the right thing and return the healthy dogs.
They're both "pit bulls," but friendly and approachable.
One is dark, with a white chest, the other is a brindle who also has a white mark on her chest.
