A highway project in Iceland may get halted because of concerns over the danger to an area believed to be inhabited by elves.
Seriously.
Elf advoates and environmentalists say the Icelandic Road and Coastal Commission should abandon a proposed highway from Reykjavik to a suburb called Gardabaer.
Believe it or not, elves -- or "Huldufolk," the hidden people -- are no joke in the country of about 320,000 people.
They say the project would disturb the elves' natural habitat, which is especially important in that area because of the presence of an elf church.
In fact, a recent poll indicates that more than 60 percent of Icelanders believe in at least the possibility of elves.
Environmentalists are more concerned with the impact on a lava field.
