A female student at a university in Northern California is filing a request for religious accomodation, after she says she was ordered by a university worker to stop wearing her cross necklace.
19-year-old Audrey Jarvis is a liberal arts major at Sonoma State University in the town of Rohnert Park, California, about 50 miles north of San Francisco.
She said she was told the necklace could offend other students.
"My initial reaction was one of complete shock,” she told Fox News.
Jarvis told Fox News that she was "thrown for a loop" by the university's order.
The Liberty Institute, a conservative Christian advocacy and legal defense organization, is representing Jarvis.
“It’s amazing in this day of diversity and tolerance on university campuses that a university official would engage in this type of obvious religious discrimination,” Liberty Institute attorney Hiram Sasser told Fox News.
The University confirmed the incident happened but said the worker was "completely wrong" and that they're trying to contact Jarvis to apologize to her.
Jarvis said that people of faith need to take a stand for their beliefs.
“We need to band together as Christians and fight back,” she told Fox News.
