She was a darling during the depression for thousands of movie goers.
Shirley Temple first hit the stage when she was three years old. Her biggest hits came in films like Curly Top, Animal Crackers in My Soup, and Bright Eyes where she sang the song she would forever be remembered for.
“On the Good Ship Lollipop” became the tune many whistled or hummed as they went to work.
Temple married Charles Black, hyphenated her last name and became the U.S. ambassador to Ghana and later ambassador to Czechoslovakia.
The movie-going public never adjusted to Temple growing up, and she retired from the movies at the age of 21.
She and Charles were married more than fifty years before his death in 2006.
The Black family released a statement after her death saying;
"We salute her for a life of remarkable achievements as an actor, as a diplomat, and most importantly as our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and adored wife for fifty-five years of the late and much missed Charles Alden Black."
Shirley Temple-Black was 85 years old when she died at her home in San Francisco.
