Boy Scouts vote to allow openly gay members

Vote was 60% in favor

The vote came from the national Boy Scouts of America council in Grapevine, Texas and it is groundbreaking.

The vote was clear with 60% in support of the change. This doesn't have any effect on the scout rule of not allowing openly gay adults into the organization.

Many scout troops are sponsored by churches and other Christian organiztions and many have made it know they would consider pulling their support if the measure passed.

"The Boy Scouts of America will not sacrifice its mission, or the youth served by the movement, by allowing the organization to be consumed by a single, divisive, and unresolved societal issue. While people have different opinions about this policy, we can all agree that kids are better off when they are in Scouting. Going forward, our Scouting family will continue to focus on reaching and serving youth in order to help them grow into good, strong citizens."

The new rule won't be put into place until January 1st and much may change between now and then.
