Called The Weather Forecasting Improvement Act of 2013 (H.R. 2413), the bill has a single aim “zero deaths from severe weather” said Congressman Jim Bridenstine.
Bridenstine said the bill is not only needed, it can be easily funded.
“The bill does not increase spending but rather shifts funding to make improved severe weather forecasting a higher priority of the Federal government.”
The congressman used Oklahoma as a prime example of why better forecasting is needed.
That money would be switched from climate change research to be spent on better forecasting techniques.
“My state has seen all too many times the destructive power of tornadoes and severe weather,” he began.
Bridenstine continued "in the wake of the latest outbreak in May that cost 48 lives, it is painfully clear that we must do more. The good news is that we can do more."
