Baby rhino found beside dead mother, won't sleep alone

Animal recovering nicely

Rescuers found “little” Gertjie next to her mother who had been killed by poachers for her horn.

The baby rhino was taken to South Africa's Hoedspruit Endangered Species Center for further care. "It was a devastating sight, as the tiny animal would not leave her side,” a statement from the group read.

The HESC staff confirmed a human had to sleep in the enclosure with Gertjie for several days. Taking baby steps, someone now sleeps just outside the area and a sheep named Skaap has been introduced as a “mother.”

Workers plan to keep Gertjie until he’s about 18 months old, then reintroduce him to the wild.

The Daily Mail reports Gertjie is doing well and gets fed every three hours as he continues to grow stronger.

Until then, the baby rhino can be seen on a live cam set up just for him.
