Americans are more unhappy with airlines and how they operate.
Yet even with passenger complaints up 20% from last year, the annual Airline Quality Rating shows carriers are actually doing a better job.
The numbers are a joint effort between Purdue and Wichita State University and are based on several things.

Considered are on-time arrivals, involuntary denied boardings, mishandled baggage and a combination of 12 customer complaint categories.

In order to be tested an airline had to have at least 1% of domestic scheduled-service passenger revenue during 2012.
