Admiral Twin grand re-opening is part of comeback for drive-in theaters

The movies have been showing for several weeks but Sunday marks the official grand re-opening for the Admiral Twin Drive-in.

Owner Blake Smith tells KRMG that crowds have been good on the weekends and smaller during the week but he adds that is to be expected.

Smith was recently interviewed and the Admiral Twin mentioned in a USA Today article about drive-ins making a comeback.

Drive-in.com says on its website that 1958 was the peak for drive-ins with at least 4,000 drive-ins.

"You are seeing some drive-ins around the country that are doing really well in more of a metropolitan area.  And I think it is just very Americana,” says Smith.

Now that number is in the hundreds but the USA Today profiles several drive-ins across the country that are set to re-open.

The Admiral Twin Drive-in is included in that group since a fire in 2010 destroyed the screen and started showing movies in mid-June.

“It is very nostalgic, people came out with their parents and now they are bringing their families out.  It is economical, you get two movies for the price of one,” says Smith.

He tells us the official grand re-opening complete with ribbon cutting for the Admiral Twin is Sunday with activities beginning about 6:45pm.
