Bill Warner wanted to break a world record by hitting 300 miles per hour using just a mile of pavement on his modified turbocharged Suzuki Hayabusa motorcycle.
But as Warner hit 285 MPH things went terribly wrong and he and the bike careened off the runway of a closed Maine air base.
Reports say Warner was still conscious after the wreck but died just over an hour and 15 minutes later.
This time he was trying to better 300 mph within a mile.
Warner had already gone 311 mph on the same airfield back in 2011 but that was using 1.5 miles of pavement.
Tim Kelly, race director for the Loring Timing Association said "no one will touch Bill's achievements or be the type of racer he was.”
