Hikers rescued only to take wrong turn and drown

One of the women was pregnant

The women were lost in rain and fog but an off-duty firemen helped them back to their van.

But as they drove away the two made a wrong turn and drove off a boat ramp into the water and drowned.

A county sheriff says dark conditions and tree branches kept  Amy Stiner and Melissa Moyer from seeing the sign that said the road was a dead end “it's pitch black, dark as a pocket” he commented.

The Portland Press Herald reports the car was found an hour later in 20 feet of water with the doors still locked.

He also confirmed the women were able to dial 911 after their car went into the lake "they said they were in the water and the car was filling with the water. And then the phone just went dead."

To make the story even more tragic, Stiner was five months pregnant.
