Oklahoma GOP apologizes for food stamp comment

The comments were posted on Monday. Party Chairman Randy Brogdon said Tuesday on Facebook that the post was intended to illustrate the cycle of government dependency.

Many conservatives believe the food stamp program doesn't help people get back on their feet and contributing to society.

The post said that the U.S. Department of Agriculture is handing out more food stamps and free meals than ever. More than 46 million Americans participate in the Supplemental Assistance Nutrition Program, or SNAP, commonly referred to as food stamps.

About 604,000 people receive SNAP benefits in Oklahoma.

The post goes on to say the National Park Service encourages people not to feed wild animals because they "will grow dependent on handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves."

Brogdon apologized to anyone who may have been offended.
