The new weapon is most effective when used on small boats and small aircraft like drones.
Navy personnel say the laser works “much like a blowtorch, with an unlimited magazine."
Watch video here as the weapon tracks and hits an unmanned drone and causes it to burst into flames.
The first deployment of the laser will be on the USS Ponce where it will find its way to the Middle East next year with the 5th fleet.
Each laser cost just over $30 million dollars but the Navy points out that so far, this version has not missed a target.
There are a few drawbacks. The weapon needs good line of site to be targeted so it struggles in poor weather.
There are other cool items in the Navy war chest. Check some of them out here.
