One of the planes was heading east and the other to the west when they clipped each other Monday afternoon.
In what has to be a termed a near miracle, one plane was able to land on a nearby golf course.
A surprised golfer told the Los Angeles Times "they landed in the center of the fairway. “All we heard was a thud and then he made a gentle bounce and slid down the center of the fairway, veering to the left."
All the people aboard survived with minor injuries.
The pilot of the other plane, a Cessna 172 was not as fortunate. He was killed when it fell into the Santa Monica Mountains.
The crash also started a fire that burned dry brush in the area.
Federal investigators are on the scene near Santa Monica California looking into the accident.
