Small child thought to be injured by falling fireworks was actually hit by a bullet

A three-year-old child was injured during the 4th of July fireworks display in Okmulgee.

Investigators tell KRMG that they were called about a small child being hit by a falling object in the parking lot of a local bank not far from Harmon Stadium where the display takes place every year.

The little girl was said to have been struck by an object falling from the sky during the show. Witnesses initially thought she was hit with fireworks debris.

She was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The ER doctor in Okmulgee told officers that he believed the object the child was struck with was a bullet.

She was later transported to a Tulsa hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Investigators have few clues as to where the bullet may have been fired. They currently believe the bullet was most likely fired into the air and could have been fired from a considerable distance away from where the child was located.

Anyone with any information relevant to the investigation, particularly anyone who witnessed someone firing a gun in the air during last night’s fireworks display is asked to contact the Okmulgee Police Department at (918) 756-3511.
