Scores of American Airline workers to lose their jobs

We now know the number of American Airlines mechanics that'll soon been out of a job:  140.

The number is much smaller than many had feared, primarily because hundreds of workers accepted offers to leave voluntarily.

Initially American had planned to slice 2700 Tulsa jobs.

That number was later reduced to 1300.

The union says the total number of workers impacted by layoffs is 443, but 300 can move into other positions.

As a result, around 140 will have to relocate or hit the streets looking for new work.

Sam Cirri is President of Transport Workers Union Local 514. "We hate to experience even one layoff because we know that impacts one of our members and their family, but the company originally sought to put over 2,700 of our members on the street as well as outsource the bulk of the work we perform as part of the plan it presented to the bankruptcy court. TWU 514 has greatly reduced these numbers by fighting extremely hard to keep work at the Tulsa base. This is a great example of what we can do when we stay united and fiercely protect the work of members."

Transport Workers Union Local 514 has represented American Airlines mechanics and related work groups in Tulsa since 1946.
