Although the final details haven’t been released it’s thought the deal will include wider background checks on commercial gun transactions including purchases at gun shows and over the internet.
Indications are the checks could not extend to private transactions or guns passed between family members or for gifts.
Reports are the language is not quite complete but a news conference is expected to take place at 10:00 a.m. today with an announcement being made then.
One part of the expected agreement is how the checks would be carried out. Reports say it may come through a federal firearm license holder instead of an online system.
Two Senators, Pennsylvania Republican Pat Toomey and West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin have been battling and negotiating over the deal for weeks.
