Proposed new laws could shut down abortion clinics

The law begins by requiring doctors who provide abortions to have local hospital admitting privileges.
It also requires upgraded conditions at many facilities that critics say may cause them to shut down.
Those two requirements are what caused the loudest complaints from supporters of abortion.
Planned Parenthood told the AP that only one clinic in the state employs a doctor who has these privileges.

Advocates of the proposals say the facilities should use the same guidelines other medical offices do and point out the safety concerns of less stringent oversight.

The Alabama state legislature passed the bill and it now heads to the desk of Governor Robert Bentley.
Those in support of the rule say they want to "ensure that if clinics are going to operate, they operate to high standards that protect women’s health and safety."
On the other side of the issue is the state of Washington where they are looking to mandate insurance coverage for abortion.
