KRMG finds out local school districts allow students to carry inhalers despite Canadian policy that killed student

New information this morning about a Canadian child who died because his school wouldn't let him keep his asthma inhaler with him.

KRMG listeners were outraged when we reported that story earlier this week.

We found out that districts like Tulsa Public Schools allow students to keep an inhaler with them as long as they have a prescription for it. TPS spokesman Chris Payne explains, "The only caveat is that the parents must come in and fill out some paperwork that we keep on file."

Payne explains that it's not just district policy, it's state law.

Ryan Gibbon’s Ontario school takes inhalers from students and keeps them in the office so they can be accessed if necessary.

The 12-year old was playing outside in 2012 when he had an asthma attack and later died because he couldn't get to his inhaler quick enough.
