Hospital charges woman $5,000 after failed cavity search for drugs

The woman was stopped at the border near El Paso as she coming back from Mexico after drug dogs singled her out.

An initial strip search turned up nothing.

Unsatisfied, authorities decided to be more thorough

The woman was taken to a hospital where she was looked over for more than six hours.

The search included what attorneys called "a forced gynecological exam." The woman claimed the door was left open during the exam allowing anyone passing by to see what was happening.

That wasn't the only orofice that was searched.

Doctors then gave her laxatives, no drugs were found.

She was then subjected to both an X-ray and CT scan. Still no drugs.

With nothing to go on authorities had no choice but to release the woman.

While she wasn't charged by cops or agents, she was by the hospital.  The unidentified woman was shocked to find a $5,000 bill from the hospital in her mailbox.

Suit has been filed on her behalf with attorneys saying "the failed drug war and militarized border region have created an environment in which law enforcement officials increasingly inflict extreme and illegal searches on innocent Americans."
