Gov. Stitt, state emergency leaders discuss wildfire prevention, preparedness

OKLAHOMA CITY — Governor Kevin Stitt held a joint presser with state leaders Tuesday, Feb. 24, outlining the coordinated statewide plan for wildfire preparedness.

Wildfires have affected parts of Oklahoma over the past few weeks, and Governor Stitt discussed the state’s swift and unified wildfire response last week that, according to him, helped save property and livelihoods even as fires burned more than 180,000 acres across the state.

“So, (I’m) just really, really proud of the response of getting ahead of everything. We’re not out of the woods yet. This week coming up is also high, high fire danger. We’ve got low humidity, high winds, so we certainly need to be cautious,” Stitt said.

Building on that success, the plan aims to strengthen readiness for elevated wildfire risks expected in the coming weeks.

“We’ve deployed and have standing by ready to go our air asset. Our national guard, we’ve got some teams that can be deployed very, very quickly,” Stitt said.

Numerous counties are in a Red Flag Warning until 5 p.m. Tuesday.
