TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa Fire Department responded to a fire at a residence in north Tulsa this morning.

Fire crews received the call of the fire just after 8 a.m. at a house on Troost Avenue near Independence and Utica Avenue. When firefighters arrived on scene, there was heavy black smoke coming from the home.

One man was transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Firefighters say the homeowner will be okay.

They believe a heating source caused the fire.

“It’s not a very large home, but it was significantly involved,” said Andy Little, Public Information Officer of the Tulsa Fire Department. “I talked to firefighters who believe it was accidental in nature from some alternate heating source.”

Unfortunately, several pets were lost in the fire, but firefighters were able to resuscitate several cats using oxygen designed for pets.

Firefighters want to emphasize it is important to have a smoke alarm in your home.

“Even the community. if you see a fire in its early stages, please call 911. The faster we can arrive, the more likelihood we have to save someone. Whether it be pets, or the homeowners.” said Little.

The Red Cross has been called to help the homeowner.
