OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond, along with 34 other state attorney generals, signed a letter demanding Elon Musk’s company xAI, the owner of X and the AI chatbot Grok, create guardrails to prevent the chatbot from creating nonconsensual sexual images and child sex abuse material.
The letter comes as the European Union officially opens an investigation into Grok over the same issues.
In their letter, the coalition of attorney generals stated, “You are investing tens of billions of of dollars into developing powerful AI tools. In doing so, it is your obligation to comply with the law and devote sufficient attention and resources to avoiding the kind of widespread harms and abuses we are seeing now.”
Issues with Grok arose globally after it was discovered users were able to upload images of women and children and ask Grok to “undress” them and place them into sexualized situations without consent.
One of Grok’s main selling points has been its limited regulations compared to other AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, causing the AG coalition to comment that “the ability to create nonconsensual intimate images appears to be a feature, not a bug.”
Drummond explained he signed the letter to protect Oklahoma’s citizens from sexual exploitation.
“The protection of Oklahoma’s children and citizens from exploitation is non-negotiable,” said Drummond. “xAI has a responsibility to ensure its technology cannot be weaponized to create child sexual abuse material or nonconsensual intimate images. This company must act immediately to close these dangerous loopholes and demonstrate that user safety is more than an afterthought.”
Recently, xAI has installed features that attempt to reduce this type of content. However, the coalition insisted they wanted proof these measures work and are maintained and enforced over time.
In particular, the coalition wants xAI to share what safeguards and guardrails it intends to put in place to address the following issues:
- “Ensure that Grok is no longer capable of producing nonconsensual intimate images or child sexual abuse material.
- Eliminate such content that has already been produced.
- Take action against users who have generated this content.
- Grant X users control over whether their content can be edited by Grok.”
In May, xAI will be required to remove this type of content in the United States under the federal Take It Down Act.
