TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa Police Department said they’ve identified a second suspect in connection to a 2019 homicide that occurred at a south Tulsa apartment complex.
On Oct. 10, 2019, authorities said two men approached another man law enforcement described as a known drug dealer in the apartment complex’s parking lot and attempted to rob him.
Authorities said the two men forced the man to take them to his apartment, but the man wasn’t able to find his keys.
Police said the two men then decided to enter the apartment next door where 22-year-old Benjamin Montgomery was spending time with several of his friends.
Law enforcement said Montgomery tackled one of the suspects in defense of himself and his friends and was shot in the process.
At this point, authorities said the suspects ran away from the scene.
Montgomery was taken to the hospital where he died a short time later.
The department said detectives continued to investigate this case for years and eventually they located a witness in July 2025 who provided law enforcement with information that identified Jarrell Jones as a suspect in the homicide.
Jones was then arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection to the case.
Following several interviews and further investigation, the Tulsa Police Department said they’ve now identified 24-year-old Devyn Smith as a second suspect in the 2019 homicide.
Authorities said Smith was charged with first-degree murder on Friday.
According to TPD, Smith is already serving a 10 year sentence for convictions related to firearms and assault and battery charges since June 2022.
The department said their detectives are still investigating this case.
