Bixby City Council approves vehicle ordinance update

BIXBY, Okla. — The Bixby City Council approved a vehicle ordinance update with an emergency clause, making it effective immediately.

The Bixby Police Department shared changes to the ordinance on Friday for residents to review.

Ordinance 6-1-1 Low-Speed Vehicles & Golf Carts (New Definition)

Low-speed vehicles, including golf carts, are now legal on certain city streets under the following conditions:

  • Must have at least 4 wheels
  • Maximum speed under 20 MPH
  • May only be operated on streets with 25 MPH speed limits or less
  • May only operate during daylight hours (sunrise to sunset)
  • May cross state or U.S. highways only at intersections
  • Operator must have a valid driver’s license
  • Vehicle must be insured and carry proof of insurance
  • Must be equipped with seatbelts. All occupants must be properly seated and restrained.
  • Must have daytime running lights, brake lights, turn signals, rearview mirror, horn, locking brake and manufacturer serial number.

Ordinance 6-1-1 Street Legal Utility Vehicles (UTVs/Side-by-Sides)

The same ordinance also legalizes and redefines street legal utility vehicles. These vehicles may now be operated on Memorial and 151st (State and U.S. Highways), if they meet the following requirements:

  • 400cc engine or larger and capable of 50 MPH
  • Must have a steering wheel
  • Seatbelts for each occupant
  • Two headlights, two taillights, brake lights and turn signals
  • Must be registered, tagged and insured
  • Operator must have a valid Oklahoma’s driver’s license
  • No motorcycle (“M”) endorsement required
  • Windshields are not required
  • Must follow all rules of the road like any other motor vehicle

Police said these updates are intended to increase flexibility for residents while maintaining safety on roadways.
