Tulsa Zoo holds winter camp session over animal hibernation

TULSA, Okla.  — The Tulsa Zoo held a Hibernation Station themed winter camp session for elementary-aged students on Monday.

The zoo said during the wildlife adventures, campers explore the world around us, make new friends and celebrate nature. Each camp features age-appropriate programs, tours, games, creative projects, up-close animal encounters and more.

For Monday’s session, campers explored how different animals prepare for winter, why some hibernate and others only slow down and what happens inside a den during those long, chilly months.

Campers tried hands-on science experiments, built model dens and played winter-themed games. The zoo said the camp was a mix of wildlife discovery and creative learning that helps young explorers understand how animals survive the cold, while having a great time.

FOX23 spoke with Chris Young, Education Manager at the Tulsa Zoo, about the impact the camp has on the children.

“A first-hand, up-close, hands-on experience is the absolute best learning tool that we can offer. It’s great to read it in a book, or to watch it on television, or just to see it out in the zoo, but when they actually get into it, and get their hands into it, and ask questions, it gets their little minds sparked and the interests going, and that’s what we love,” said Young.

Young said the camps coincide with Tulsa Public School’s holidays. There are upcoming sessions scheduled for Jan. 19-20 and Feb. 16.
