FORT GIBSON, Okla. — An unclaimed veteran was given full military honors before being laid to rest at the Ft. Gibson National Cemetery on Thursday.
U.S. Army Veteran, Specialist Charles Rickman was given a final salute and full honors by cemetery staff and a local honor guard after no next of kin or loved ones could be found.
The Veterans Administration and cemetery staff attempted to locate anyone close to Rickman, and when they didn’t, they carried out full honors on their own.
Full military honors included a gun salute, the playing of “taps”, a folded flag ceremony and the reading of The Bible honoring his service before he was laid to rest with the traditional marble headstone.
Rickman’s flag will be donated to the cemetery and will be flown in his honor on a future designated date.
