Tulsa residents say their water bills are inconsistent with usage

TULSA, Okla. — Residents have been posting on social media and telling FOX23 that their water bills are spiking — and they don’t know why.

A FOX23 post on Next Door got 150 messages in response, all from residents who are confused at rising bills.

Robyn Woods’ last bill was $285, her normal water bill is usually $150.

Chris Ossee moved his dad into his old house. His dad’s first bill was $200. Chris checked the meter and realized the city charged him for 20,000 of water he never used. They were issued a refund just for the same thing to happen the month after.

Troy Stafford, Tulsa’s utility systems manager, says a spike in the bill simply means a spike in usage, but a new billing system has made reading some of the meters more complicated, causing some errors. Many of those errors have been resolved.

Anyone can still request that an inspector comes out to read their meter, but with a ransomware attack and employee shortages it is challenging to get ahold of someone with the city.

Monica Hamilton, the customer care director, says the city is working to hire more staff. In the meantime, they have also set up a new email that you can reach out to for assistance tulsa311@cityoftulsa.org.
