Tulsa Public Schools staff will start getting COVID vaccines this week

TULSA, Okla. — Officials with the Tulsa Public School district say they’re ready to receive COVID vaccines for staff members.

During Monday night’s Tulsa School Board meeting, members said more than 500 staff members could get the shot in the next few days.

Chief Operations Officer Jorge Robles said during the meeting the district is working closely with the Tulsa Health Department and the plan is to start shots on Wednesday.

The first staff members who would get the shot are the ones who fall into Phase 2 of the State’s vaccine plan, including teachers over the age of 65 as well as school nurses and health care assistants.

Board member John Croisant said, “I think it’s huge that we are starting vaccinations. The fact that we’re starting that will give us the opportunity to see how it goes and build on that.”

“On the other hand,” he added, “we’re looking at numbers that have almost doubled in the community since December. So, at the same time that the cavalry is coming in, we have not gotten everybody a vaccination, and they are probably at risk more now than they’ve ever been.”

The district says the rest of the TPS staff members should start getting their vaccines in late January into early February.
