Virginia man accused of stabbing teenage son’s football teammates during altercation

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. — A Virginia man has been charged with the malicious wounding of two teenagers he is accused of stabbing during an altercation that erupted during a private school’s football team practice.

Responding officers found two male victims, ages 17 and 18, suffering from stab wounds just after 6 p.m. Tuesday and later arrested Turon M. Savoy Sr. of Chesterfield, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported.

Both victims were transported for medical treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries, the newspaper reported.

Chesterfield Police Chief Col. Jeffrey Katz stated in a Facebook post that during the practice a coach reprimanded a 17-year-old student, who then physically assaulted the coach. Two fellow players, identified by Katz as the two stabbing victims, intervened to “protect their coach from the assault.”

At that point, Katz stated, the father of the attacking student pulled out a knife and repeatedly stabbed the two intervening teammates in the face and chest, WWBT reported.

Katz praised all involved for their handling of the situation.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to publicly THANK those two heroic players for doing the right thing. To THANK the coach for committing to the development of our community’s youth at personal risk, and to THANK the men and women of the Chesterfield County Police Department who continue to choose entry into the arena – sometimes to the jeers of jackals – in order to make a positive difference in our community and serve complete strangers in their time of greatest need. I consider it the honor of a lifetime to stand beside them and to advocate for their spirit of selfless service,” Katz wrote in his post.
