Russia school shooting: 17 killed, 24 hurt in Izhevsk, officials say

IZHEVSK, Russia — Russian officials said Monday that the death toll has risen after a 34-year-old gunman opened fire on a school in central Russia earlier in the day, according to multiple reports.

Update 6:40 p.m. EDT Sept. 26: Authorities said, according to The Associated Press, 17 people have been killed and 24 injured before the gunman shot himself to death.

Update 9:54 a.m. EDT Sept. 26: Authorities said the shooter, identified as Artem Kazantsev, killed two security guards before killing 13 more and injuring two dozen others at School No. 88 in Izhevsk, Reuters and The Associated Press reported.

Officials with Russia’s Investigative Committee said the gunman wore a black T-shirt with Nazi symbols on it and a balaclava at the time of the shooting. Authorities said in a statement obtained by Reuters that they were searching his home and investigating to determine any links between the shooter and “neo-fascist views and Nazi ideology.”

Eleven children were among those killed, the AP reported. All but two of the people injured were also children, according to the AP.

Officials said the gunman previously attended School No. 88, Reuters reported. Authorities said he killed himself after the attack.

Original report: At least 13 people were killed when a gunman opened fire at a central Russia school on Monday, authorities said.

According to The Associated Press and Reuters, the shooting occurred at a school for first through 11th grades in Izhevsk. The country’s Investigative Committee said the shooter killed seven children and six adults before fatally shooting himself, the news agency reported. Another 14 children and seven adults were hurt, officials said.

Authorities have not released the name of the gunman, whose shirt was emblazoned with “Nazi symbols,” the AP reported.
