Prince Philip’s funeral: Who has been invited; who is walking behind the coffin; order of events

The funeral of Prince Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth, will take place Saturday at Windsor Castle.

Here is the order of the day’s events and a list of the people who have been invited to the services.

Due to COVID-19 rules in the United Kingdom, only 30 people may gather together for the funeral.

The day’s events (all times are local London time)

11 a.m.: Philip’s coffin will be moved from the private chapel to the Inner Hall of Windsor Castle.

2 p.m.: The Lord Chamberlain, the Constable and Governor of Windsor Castle and the Dean of Windsor will enter in the Inner Hall.

2:10 p.m.: The Dean will offer prayers will then leave to go to St George’s Chapel, where the funeral will be held.

2:15 p.m. - 2:17 p.m.: Representatives from the services will be in place in the Castle’s Quadrangle to honor Philip’s military relationships as the band of the Grenadier Guards moves into Engine Court.

2:20 p.m. - 2:27 p.m.: The funeral guests who are not taking part in the procession that will follow Philip’s coffin will leave Windsor Castle by car to make the journey to the chapel.

2:27 p.m.: A Land Rover, a vehicle chosen by Philip to carry his coffin, will enter the Quadrangle via George IV Gate where bands at the site will play music. The pallbearers will move to the side of the Land Rover and together move toward the State Entrance.

2:38 p.m.: The coffin will be lifted in the Inner Hall.

2:40 p.m.: Members of Philip’s household will fall into line in the procession.

2:41 p.m.: The coffin will be brought through the State Entrance to be met by members of the royal family, who will be walking in procession. The coffin will be placed onto the Land Rover.

2:44 p.m.: The Queen will leave from the Sovereign’s Entrance as the national anthem is played. The car she is in will pause as it reaches the rear of the procession.

2:45 p.m.: The procession will set off. Once at the chapel, the Queen will be received by the Dean of Windsor who will show the guests to their seats. A royal salute will be given by the Windsor Castle Guard as the coffin passes the Parade Ground.

2:53 p.m.: The Land Rover will arrive at the foot of the West Steps of the chapel and the pallbearers will take their positions. The coffin will be carried up the steps and halt on the second landing as members of the royal family take their positions on the steps.

3 p.m.: A minute of silence will take place, then the Dean of Windsor and the Archbishop of Canterbury will receive the coffin. The doors to St George’s Chapel will be closed. The coffin will be placed on the Catafalque in the Quire and members of the royal family who have walked in the procession will take their places for the service, which is set to last 50 minutes.

After the service, the coffin will be lowered into the Royal Vault.
