Students at Aliquippa Junior Senior High School will now “only be permitted to have a bag of chips of up to 4 ounces and one closed drink of up to 20 ounces,” WPXI reported.

According to a post on the Aliquippa School District Facebook page, the policy was implemented “due to the excessive amounts of outside snacks being brought to school.” School officials said that amounts over the permitted quantities will be disposed of by school officials. Student’s lunches will also follow the same guidelines and be subject to search, according to the statement posted on the school’s website.

The new policy sparked a mixed reaction.

“I’ve seen some of the snacks kids are bringing in when I drop my daughter off,” parent Janisha Walker told WPXI. “I’m asking daughter like, ‘Are they setting up a small store? Why are they carrying a variety box of chips and two liters of soda into the school?’”

Other parents were critical of the “potato chip police” and questioned whether such a strict policy was needed.

School superintendent Phillip Woods told WPXI that some students were bringing in shopping bags full of snacks and then trading or selling them to other students. Aliquippa school board member Catherine Colalella told WPXI that students bringing in drug-laced edibles is also a concern for schools in the area.
