North Carolina toddler seriously hurt after impaired father strikes him with car, police say

GASTONIA, N.C. — A North Carolina toddler was seriously injured when his father, who was impaired, struck him with a vehicle outside a Gastonia home, authorities said.

According to WSOC-TV, Andrew McGary, 1, was outside his Liberty Street home Monday when his father, Jimmy McGary, 19, got in a car to leave. The toddler darted behind the vehicle as it backed up and was struck, the boy’s mother said.

Andrew McGary, who suffered a fractured skull, was rushed to a nearby hospital and later airlifted to Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte, WSOC reported. He is now on a breathing tube, authorities said.

Police arrested Jimmy McGary, who admitted to smoking marijuana an hour before the incident and taking prescription medication earlier in the day, on charges of driving while impaired and without an operator’s license, authorities told WSOC. He remains in the Gaston County Jail on a $100,000 bond, the news outlet reported.
