Man fatally struck by train after dropped phone dispute at Queens subway station

QUEENS, N.Y. — A man was fatally struck by a subway train Monday evening after falling onto the tracks during a fight on the Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Avenue station platform in Queens, New York.

According to WABC-TV, 48-year-old Heriberto Quintana bumped into 50-year-old Carlos Garcia at around 4:45 p.m. EDT, knocking Garcia’s cellphone to the tracks below.

Quintana refused to retrieve Garcia’s phone when asked, and their ensuing argument escalated quickly to a brawl, the TV station reported.

According to police, Quintana fell onto the tracks during the fight and was struck by an oncoming F train, The New York Times reported.

Quintana, of Queens, was pronounced dead at Elmhurst Hospital a short while later, WABC reported.

Garcia was charged Tuesday with manslaughter, the Times reported.

According to WABC, Quintana’s death marks the ninth killing of 2022 in New York City’s subway system.
