Kansas Halloween shooting: Teen dead, 7 others hurt at Kansas City party

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — At least one person is dead and seven others are recovering from injuries after gunfire erupted at a Halloween party in Kansas, authorities said.

Update 1:36 p.m. EDT Nov. 1: Police on Tuesday morning identified the victim who died as a 17-year-old, noting that an 18-year-old remained hospitalized, KMBC reported.

The six other victims ranged in age from 15 to 16, and no arrests had been made by 1:30 p.m. EDT, police confirmed.

“This is very unfortunate. This stuff in the community has to stop. There’s far too many guns out here. This was a party with high-school-age students. Like I said, everyone has guns now. We need to be smarter than this,” Kansas City Chief of Police Karl Oakman said during a news conference.

Police are searching for four or six different shooters who fled the scene in a dark-colored SUV, KMBC reported.

Oakman also confirmed Tuesday that the party had been promoted on social media, a parent was at home at the time of the shooting and previous parties had been held at that home with no reported issues, the TV station reported.

Original report: According to KSHB and KMBC, the incident occurred shortly after 9 p.m. Monday at a home on South 50th Street in Kansas City. Kansas City police Chief Karl Oakman said about 70 to 100 guests, including many “high school-aged” teens, were attending a party when uninvited people arrived. After the host told the unwanted guests to leave, they went outside and opened fire at the home, killing one person and wounding seven, Oakman said.

Police have not released the names of the suspects or victims, two of whom were critically injured, KMBC reported. Authorities have not arrested anyone in connection with the case, according to the news outlet.

No further details, including a suspect description, were immediately available.
