Authorities declined to release the suspect’s name and photo, citing the juvenile’s age. Officials with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said they do not believe anyone else was involved in the shooting.

The attack, characterized by officials as the city’s “largest mass casualty shooting in more than a decade,” claimed the lives of Kezzie Childs, 42, Raymond Childs, 42, Elijah Childs, 18, Rita Childs, 13, Kiara Hawkins, 19, and Hawkins’ unborn baby boy, according to police.

“Yesterday, we promised swift justice for this heinous act. Today, we delivered on that promise,” Chief Randal Taylor said Monday in a news release. “While removing the alleged perpetrator of yesterday’s mass murder from our neighborhoods does not bring back the lives senselessly lost, hopefully, it will bring us one step closer to healing as a community.”

Authorities said over the weekend that they found a juvenile with apparent gunshot wounds after being called early Sunday morning to a report of a person shot on the 3300 block of E. 36th Street. Further information led police to a home less than a quarter mile away in the 3500 block of Adams Street, where authorities found the other shooting victims.

In a statement obtained by WXIN, Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett called Monday’s arrest “the first step toward justice for these senseless acts.”

“While nothing can bring back the Childs family, I hope that the swift action of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department offers some comfort to all of those who have been left to grapple with this tragic loss,” Hogsett said.

“My thanks go to the men and women of IMPD whose thoughtful investigative work led to the arrest of the suspect, and my prayers are with the family, friends, and community impacted by this devastating act of violence.”

Authorities continue to investigate.
