The Department of Children and Families started an investigation after bugs were seen crawling from a child’s backpack during class, WEAR-TV reported.

Child welfare agents took the children, whose ages have not been released, from the home while they investigated.

Investigators went to the house around 4:30 p.m. It smelled of feces and other “unpleasant smells,” investigators said. Deputies saw bugs crawling across floors and countertops. The kitchen was covered in dirty dishes, trash and bugs. The fridge only contained expired food and bottles of beer. The floors in the bedrooms were covered in feces and dirty clothes. Bugs and dirty diapers covered the bathroom.

Donald Cox, 45, and Catherin Cox, 42, were arrested and charged with four counts of child neglect, according to arrest records. They are being held in jail on $10,000 bond.
